Gilbane Conference on Content Management Technologies - Boston
November 29 - December 1 Conference Events submitted via web form.
Everybody knows they need “content management”. Content management technologies are now mainstream and need to be part of all major enterprise applications, and integrated into IT architectures and infrastructures. But what does that mean? To some people content management is all about web publishing, or building Intranets, to others it means managing multiple, perhaps all, types of unstructured data. Still to others, the term might be associated with a particular aspect of managing information, such as creating it, searching for it, organizing it, transforming it, or sharing it. In Boston we will be focused on the following topics:     * Content Management     * Document & Records Policy, Governance & Compliance Management     * Digital Asset Management     * Authoring tools     * Content Delivery     * Enterprise Search     * Knowledge Management     * Collaboration     * Enterprise Information/Content Integration     * Content Technology Works™

    Digital Signage Content Strategies

    Monday, 23 January 2006 - Tuesday, 24 January 2006
    The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino
    Las Vegas, Nevada

This first-of-a-kind summit brings together stakeholders in the rapidly progressing industry from top retailers, brand companies, network operators, location owners from all relevant verticals, advertising agencies, blue-chip advertisers, content creators/managers and rich media executives.

This educational event includes sessions on determining the objective of your digital signage network, how to create content that is both meaningful and entertaining, how to seamlessly integrate rich media into your existing media plans, and how to measure the effectiveness of digital signage and your content management strategies.

Key conference sessions on maximizing content for digital signage networks include:
    • Why content is king: make content relevant, timely, and venue specific
    • Defining your content strategy: tailor content to match your network’s objective
    • Capture consumers’ attention: tools and tips needed to create content that drives product lift and impacts the bottom line
    • Integrating digital signage: the right media mix for the right media campaigns
    • Content strategies at retail: gauge how content impacts consumers
    • Sourcing compelling content: where to go and how best to deliver

Every Digital Signage Network comes with its own set of challenges.  What kind of DSN have you developed?  Single or multi-purpose?  Is your objective to advertise, merchandise, brand, communicate, or perhaps a combination?

It is not enough just to have movement and flashy graphics. Your content needs to generate results, increase sales lift, brand, inform, educate, reduce perceived length of wait times, entertain and improve customer experience. The challenge is to leverage the upswing in awareness and desire to improve your Digital Signage content.

    Open Publish 2006
January 30 Conference Events submitted via web form.
Open Publish 2006 will be the sixth annual conference for people who create, manage and publish information across traditional and electronic media.

What was clear at Open Publish 2005 is that battles over publishing technology are largely resolved. With even the formidable Microsoft Office file formats now migrating to open standards, it is clear that proprietary technology is no longer acceptable to users. 2005 also saw the introduction of the "mash-ups" where developers started connecting together their own code with popular sites such as Google Maps and Yahoo's Flickr. It is in this context that the 2006 Open Publish will shift focus from technology to practice. As standards level the technological playing field, the key success factor will be the capability and experience of the practitioners.

Therefore, Open Publish 2006 will continue to focus on the key areas of interest such single-source publishing and web content management, however this year will largely be from a perspective of methodologies, case studies, best practice, project management and human factors, rather than technology standards.

Employees are demanding simpler, more intuitive and more “Web” like intranet experiences. Shiv Singh, CIO.com.au

Remember an intranet is only as good as how it serves its employees and its company. Shiv Singh, CIO.com.au

Your intranet is overloaded with content, difficult to navigate, no body uses it and the technology is out-dated.  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to re-design the intranet ensuring that it adds maximum value to the organisation. Does this challenge sound familiar?

Research shows that on average an organisation’s intranet will need to be re-designed every 2-3 years. Nowadays it is an accepted fact that an intranet is not a static tool, it is constantly evolving and changing to adapt to organisational changes and requirements. Therefore the question is what do you want to achieve and where do you begin?

Ark Group’s 4th Annual Re-designing Your Intranet conference will focus specifically on how your intranet can add maximum value to the organisation. The event will provide answers to key problem areas such as:

o Winning the support of senior management
o Building a sound information architecture
o The importance of usability testing
    o Managing governance and ownership
o Taking control of content overload
    o Understanding intranet technology

This event gives you the opportunity to listen to case studies from organisations that have recently been through a re-design. Share their success stories and learn from their mistakes. Ensure that your re-design is completed on time and within budget and that your mission is accomplished!

    The Future of Search
February 27 - March 2 Conference Events submitted via web form.
Effective business or enterprise search, for many organisations, implies much more than simply typing in a keyword and pressing ‘go’, as most users do when searching the World Wide Web. It requires the ability to retrieve relevant information in a timely manner across multiple data repositories and involves the use of various technologies such as content classification, categorization and clustering; fact and entity extraction; metadata and taxonomy management; visualization and personalized search.
If we then add to the mix, considerations like security, compliance, and disparate content sets, you can begin to understand the importance of having a clearly defined search strategy and a robust, scalable search engine. Successful search needs to reflect your business requirements.

This conference will focus on they key considerations for ensuring effective search across your enterprise as well as looking at the future developments in the search market.

It will deliver case studies that highlight key considerations that include:

? Defining what search means to organisations today
? Implementing search and optimising search relevance
    ? Personalisation and profiling
? Searching across unstructured and structured content
? Embedding search into workflow applications
    ? Discovery and analytics
    ? The future of search

    Plone CMS Symposium
March 8 - 10 Conference Events submitted via web form.
The 2006 New Orleans Plone Symposium will be this March 8-10, 2006 at the Astor Crowne Plaza in the famous New Orleans French Quarter.  The goal of this year’s gathering is to share ideas on relevant topics through discussions around the pragmatic usage of Plone and real-world experiences of organizations like Disney and fundable.org.  While technology is always the core focus of open source technology events, this year's symposium will also addresses specific business topics including law, non-profits, venture capital and business models.

“The New Orleans Symposium aims at being the top open source content management conference in North America for 2006”, Says Alan Runyan, President of Enfold Systems.  The event will host two concurrent sessions – one track focusing on business, and the other on technology.  The first day consists of 3 hour tutorials on topics from Plone best practices to implementations at non-profits.  The next two days utilize 45 minute talks ranging from Enterprise Search strategies to Content Delivery options.

Andrei Codrescu, the noted writer and commentator, will close the symposium. Known for his unique insights into society and human nature, his thoughts on the open source community and its future promises to be both thought provoking and entertaining. Like a great cup of gumbo, the rich mix of applied business and technology topics should make this year’s Plone Symposium a memorable event.

2006 marks the fourth year of active deployment for the Plone Open Source community.  To encourage and cultivate the community spirit, daily post-event socializing is scheduled for the world-renown New Orleans Vieux Carre (French Quarter). IA Summit 2006
March 23 - 27 Conference, IAI The Information Architecture (IA) Summit is the premier gathering place for information architects. Everyone who touches on IA is welcome to share and learn.

IA Summit 2006: Learning, Doing, Selling

Last year’s IA Summit attracted over 400 attendees, including beginners, experienced IAs, and people in a range of related fields.

This year we'll roll up our sleeves and tackle three key areas: Learning, Doing, and Selling IA.

Learning IA: People new to IA, IA mentors, educators and researchers, as well as any IA looking to specialize in a new area of the field will be supported by sessions that focus on acquiring new IA knowledge. From introductions to IA, through evaluations of academic programs to research papers on the frontiers of IA, we plan to include them all.

Doing IA: Practicing IAs have so much to share! Tips & tricks, new ways to use old tools, IA methods, processes and deliverables, they are all welcome, as well as case studies and models or overviews of the field.

Selling IA: Whether it is by your colleagues, your manager, or your client, at some point in your career you will be asked to explain the value of your IA work. This will be the topic of several sessions in our program, and we encourage people who have been on the receiving end of these explanations to submit proposals too!

So, mark the 2006 IA Summit in your agenda:

    Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to have Dr. David Weinberger, author of Small Pieces Loosely Joined and co-author of The Cluetrain Manifesto, as this year's keynote speaker.

Are you moving your information to the web? Reusing content among multiple print and online deliverables? Sharing content among departments such as training, marketing, editorial, and technical information development? Are you restricting some content for internal use only or directing it to specific targeted user communities? Are you faced with a challenging, multi-faceted user environment but tied down with only document blobs at your disposal?

Join those in the forefront of component information management at the 8th Annual Content Management Strategies conference. Learn to create modular, topic-based content, ready for assembly into compound documents, and customized for targeted delivery. Take content embedded in those massive tomes and move critical components to the precise points where they are needed—in print or on the web.

Content Management Strategies 2006 brings you three essential tracks. Focus on management and planning or technical design and implementation, and learn how to implement the DITA standard from the experts. At CM Strategies, you’ll find a returning community of information developers and publishers who value building core content as much as its presentation and delivery.

Gilbane Conference on Content Management Technologies - SFO
April 24 - 26 Conference, Seminar Events submitted via web form.
Everybody knows they need Content management. CM technologies are now mainstream and need to be part of all major enterprise applications, and integrated into IT architectures and infrastructures. In San Francisco we will be focused on the following topics: Enterprise DRM * Content Management * Document & Records Policy
Make Your CMS Work For You
April 27 Workshop Events submitted via web form.
Content management systems are billed as solutions to all of your Web site woes. They can also cost your organization hundreds of thousands of dollars. Why do so many CMS projects fail?

They fail because companies don’t recognize that content management is a process, not a technology, and requires planning to ensure success. We have seen again and again that expensive technological solutions are ignored when they don't meet your organization’s needs and expectations. Personal experience with an enterprise CMS as well as work with several clients has led us to develop a series of steps that will help you use your CMS efficiently.

    Topics we'll cover include:

    Building your team
    Assessing your content
    Vendor selection
    How to work with IT
    Templates and components
    Metadata and taxonomies
    Content migration

Whether this is your first time considering a content management system, or you’ve been burned by failed implementations in the past, we can help you do it right.

    This workshop is suitable for:

Web managers planning a CMS installation
    Information architects
    Visual designers
Writers, editors, and other content producers
    Project managers

Hosted by CSW Group, the XML Summer School combines an innovative curriculum with world renowned speakers, to bring you an XML event like no other.

    Session description:
Google quietly entered the Enterprise Search market in early 2002. Analyst firms dismissed it as a tool for sophisticated environments, assigning it to the realms of inexpensive, simple, DIY search. The product line has grown since then, and has gone on the offensive in terms of marketing. New capabilities, notably the ability to integrate with Google Desktop Search for Enterprise, are renewing calls to "just get Google." Is it right for your organization? Perhaps. Process automation is essential to the deployment of imaging systems, from orchestrating front-end capture to routing documents through the step by step completion of tasks. Both buyers and sellers recognize the importance of process automation and workflow, but the deployment techniques vary considerably. Some choose to use simple notification via email, while others use work queues. Yet the jump from workflow routing of images to enterprise BPM is significant, and often the needs and requirements are considerably different. This AIIM Webinar will focus on process automation of image intensive applications within the enterprise content management marketplace. We will provide a brief background on some of the challenges in the market today, and then dive into lessons learned by our clients.

The session will conclude with a Q&A section.

    • Processing images almost always requires some form of workflow
    • Document capture is more complex than anticipated
    • Document workflow is very different than BPM
    • Metrics and measurement are critical measurable payback

    About Apache Lenya
    **********************
Apache Lenya https://lenya.apache.org is based on Apache Cocoon https://cocoon.apache.org, the XML publishing framework from the Apache Software Foundation. Apache Cocoon has been widely adopted in recent years and has become the defacto standard for XML publishing.

It delivers a wide range of functionality, from generation of HTML, WML, XML, PDF, SVG and RTF from a single data source, interfaces to various databases over JDBC as well as LDAP.

Apache Lenya integrates the BXE, Kupu and Xopus WYSIWYG editors. Apache Lenya makes use of official W3C standards wherever possible: XML, XSLT, XML Schema, XPath, XPointer, XLink, XInclude. In a departure from other CMS, Apache Lenya stores not only content in XML, but also CMS functionality such as user management, access control, revision control and workflow management. Customization of Apache Lenya is mostly done with further XML technologies such as XSLT and XSP. Java code is only necessary in special cases.

Apache Lenya is built up from individual modules written in Java that extend Cocoon with CMS functionality: Access Controller, User Administration, Editor Interfaces, Revision Controller, Scheduler, Workflow Manager, Publisher / Replicator, Dependency Manager, Forms Editor, Import-/Export-Functionality. Since these modules are based on XML themselves, they can be exchanged by modules from other vendors (Open Source or proprietary) as needed.

    Joint Annual Meeting and Conference

    Joint Annual Meeting and Conference

    15-17 June 2006
    Toronto, Ontario

    Overview

We are excited to have this year''s annual meeting and conference in Toronto, Ontario.

Toronto is an astonishing and eclectic mosaic of people and languages, cultures and lifestyles, all in one clean, safe, friendly place. It''s a North American city of rare openness, energy, and style. Its skyline includes the CN tower, considered one of the Modern Wonders of the World, and its miles of waterfront, beaches, boardwalks and trails perfectly complement Toronto''s bustling downtown core.

Plans for the conference are well underway, with an active calls for presentations, papers, and poster sessions. We''ve negotiated some great rates at the hotel, and the Toronto Pearson International Airport is less than 90 minutes away from over 60% of the U.S. population. Toronto is also Canada''s most international city, which is perfect for us because our meeting is the triennial international conference among the indexing societies. We expect delegates from around the world.

We hope you can join us this year. You don''t want to miss what is becoming the biggest, most exciting, and most rewarding conference so far.

The conference hotel is the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre located in the Financial District and connected to the Eaton Centre shopping complex. The hotel is a short walk from theatres, sports venues, and fine restaurants. ASI has reserved a block of sleeping rooms at a discounted rate at the Marriott, allowing ASI the use of the meeting and exhibit space at a great discount. Your support in staying at the Marriott helps to keep ASI''s meeting and membership costs down. We''ve negotiated a rate of $169 Canadian, approximately $147 US single/double occupancy per night (plus applicable taxes) for the conference period, an excellent value for this city.

    Reservations Deadline
The hotel reservations deadline for our room block is May 23, 2006; rooms will be on a space-available basis after that date. The designated link above will allow you to assess room availability and book your reservations directly with the Marriott by searching with the group code listed. To make reservations by phone, call Marriott reservations toll-free at (800) 905-0667, and identify yourself as an ASI/American Society of Indexers meeting attendee. Please be sure to book your rooms early - the number of rooms is limited!

    Transportation from Airport to Hotel
If you are flying into the main Toronto airport (Pearson Airport, code YYZ), there are several ways to travel to the conference hotel. The Marriott estimates the one-way costs of traveling from Pearson as $2 by bus, $2.25 by subway, and $40 by taxi. (All prices are in Canadian dollars.) The buses and subways in Toronto are excellent throughout the city. Driving directions and other details are available at the hotel maps page.

Another option is the privately operated Pacific Western Airport Express from Pearson International Airport to certain downtown hotels. They don''t stop at our conference hotel, Eaton Centre Marriott, but their Metropolitan Hotel stop (near the bus terminal) is a walkable city-block away from the Eaton Centre. Cost one-way for adult: $16.45. Round-trip fare: $28.35. Buy on-line and get 10% discount. Phone toll-free in Canada 1-800-387-6787 or not toll free from the U.S. 1-905-564-3232.

    eLearning Masterclass
July 20 - 21 Workshop Events submitted via web form.
ELearning can be an effective and innovative way of delivering training content by electronic methods, providing an efficient and consistent means of conveying information across the organisation and enhancing employee comprehension of key issues. Additionally, with technological advances constantly taking place, eLearning can allow for a broad range of delivery methods to best suit organisational structure and culture.

However, whilst many organisations have either implemented eLearning programmes, or at least examined what eLearning can offer in terms of advancements in learning and development, many fail to fully grasp its potential. Key to the success of eLearning as a training device is ensuring that the programme you deliver is user-friendly, able to adapt to the needs of your organisation, and that you establish a broader framework to integrate it into your learning and development strategy.

This two-day interactive masterclass will provide you with an opportunity to engage with the course leaders and other attendees to really improve your understanding of how to get your eLearning initiative operating to its full advantage. You will leave this masterclass enthused and full of new ideas to implement in your workplace.

    Open Publish
July 26 - 28 Open Publish is an annual conference for people who create, manage and publish information across traditional and electronic media.

2005 also saw the introduction of the “mash-ups” where developers started connecting together their own code with popular sites such as Google Maps and Yahoo’s Flickr. It is in this context that the 2006 Open Publish conference will shift focus from technology to practice. As standards level the technological playing field, the key success factor will be the capability and experience of the practitioners.

Therefore, Open Publish 2006 will continue to focus on the key areas of interest such as single-source publishing and web content management, however this year will largely be from a perspective of methodologies, case studies, best practice, project management and human factors, rather than technology standards.

We are pleased to announce that the Call for Papers is now open and we look forward to yet another year of increased participation from the local and international community.

KM, Content and Collaboration Australia 06
    14 - 16 August 2006 - Sydney
For the last two years Ark Group, through KM Australia, has delivered the region’s knowledge management community with an annual knowledge sharing and networking event. Recently, our research has indicated to us trends throughout public and private sectors and across industries that highlight a movement towards convergence within the fields of KM, CM, and IM as strategic disciplines. The vital role that collaboration will play as this trend grows has prompted us to expand the event and incorporate content and collaboration into the overall programme. KM, Content and Collaboration Australia (KCC Australia) will offer you a thorough evaluation of the latent trends, thinking and technology around knowledge and content management and collaborative working.

KCC Australia is where KM and CM tools and techniques converge offering you a holistic approach to managing your organisation’s unstructured information and collective expertise.

Rest assured, KCC Australia will continue to offer you an insight into tacit and explicit KM techniques from today’s market leaders and gurus. It will still recognise the critical importance of process-based KM strategies and implementation. However, it will also offer you valuable insights into the latest CM, search and collaboration technologies and a thorough understanding of the principles behind capturing, sharing, exploiting and communicating your information assets.

Consequently KCC Australia features two streams. The knowledge and collaboration stream will provide an honest appraisal of cultural issues and change management techniques, and the content stream will offer an unbiased evaluation of CM trends and technologies. These two streams enable you to create a learning experience that is tailored to your specific needs and to meet like-minded professionals facing challenges similar to yours.

Taxonomies can assist you in organising information, managing systems and meeting the specific needs of user groups. A taxonomy that is well designed, implemented and managed, has the potential to transform your organisation so that it consistently achieves efficiency, productivity and long-term viability.

However, many organisations are now realising that there are certain critical areas that are commonly lacking within their taxonomies. In order to understand how your taxonomy can improve business functions, it is essential that you first establish the purpose of your taxonomy. Without adequately aligning your taxonomy with business strategy, developing user capabilities, and continually undertaking maintenance processes, you will find it increasingly difficult to achieve your taxonomy’s potential.

This conference will focus on how to enhance the potential of your taxonomy
by addressing and evaluating the following key areas:
    • Establishing the groundwork for taxonomy implementation
    • Working with your organisation’s business strategy to ensure your taxonomy’s viability
    • Understanding your taxonomy’s terminology and gaining confidence in utilising its functions
    • Developing and enhancing the capabilities of user groups
    • Ensuring your taxonomy will remain effective and functional in the future

    Best Practices Conference 2006
      September 18 - 20

    Collaborating in a Flat World

In 2006, join CIDM members and colleagues at the 8th annual Best Practices conference. Learn from experienced managers who are adept at solving difficult problems and moving their teams ahead. Using our experiences as a guide, we'll discuss in presentations and open forum the strengths we need to

    • increase collaboration within our organizations as well as globally
    • move up the value chain as lower-end work is being outsourced
    • align our organizations with the broader goals of our corporations, increase productivity, and reduce costs
    • keep our departments intact and viable
    • maintain quality in our information products
    • implement content management initiatives
    • pursue customer-driven innovations
    • create content that can be effectively localized

This year’s Best Practices conference focuses on collaboration and globalization within our organizations. The theme book for the conference is The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman. With his book, Friedman considers what the world flattening means to Americans and the rest of the world. How will life change for all of us? Who will be the winners and losers? How can we ethically manage the inevitable disruption? How can information developers move up the value chain as more tasks are outsourced to a global community?

Some of the topics include Web Services specifications and enhancements, Web Services discovery and integration, Web Services security, Web Services standards and formalizations, Web Services Modeling, Web Services-oriented Software Engineering, Web Services-oriented software testing, Web Services-based applications and solutions, Web Services realizations, and semantic Web Services.

The 2006 IEEE International Conference on Web Services (ICWS 2006) will be part of the IEEE Computer Society Congress on Software Technology and Engineering Practice (CoSTEP) to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of IEEE Computer Society!

ICWS has been a prime international forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of Web Services, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of Web Services. ICWS 2006 is sponsored by IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Services Computing and will be co-located with the 2006 IEEE International Conference on Services Computing (SCC 2006), the 30th Annual International Computer Software and Applications Conference (COMPSAC 2006), as well as the 2006 IEEE Workshops on Software Technology and Engineering Practice (STEP 2006).

Web Services are Internet-based application components published using standard interface description languages and universally available via uniform communication protocols. As the fourth international conference focusing on Web Services research, the program of ICWS 2006 will continue to feature research papers with a wide range of topics, focusing on various aspects of IT services. Some of the topics include Web Services specifications and enhancements, Web Services discovery and integration, Web Services security, Web Services standards and formalizations, Web Services Modeling, Web Services-oriented Software Engineering, Web Services-oriented software testing, Web Services-based applications and solutions, Web Services realizations, and semantic Web Services.

As the most prestigious academic conference in the field of Web Services, the First International Conference on Web Services ( ICWS 2003 ) was held at the Monte Carlo Resort in Las Vegas , Nevada , June 23 - 26, 2003, attracting hundreds of participants from 25 countries. ICWS 2004 was held at Westin Horton Plaza in San Diego , California , July 6-9, 2004. ICWS 2004 attracted about 250 registered participants from 22 countries and regions. The joint ICWS 2005 and SCC 2005 has attracted more than 300 registered participants. ICWS 2003, ICWS 2004, and ICWS 2005 have proven to be excellent catalysts for research and collaboration, and we fully expect that this coming ICWS 2006 conference will continue this trend.

The long-term goal of ICWS is to build up a reputable and respectable conference for the international community. It is very clear that the ICWS belongs to everyone.

Since Web Services is an information technology (IT), ICWS 2006 will continue to put its focus on all aspects of Web Services from Computer Science perspective; while SCC 2006 will concentrate on Business Services and the bridging technologies such as Business Strategy and Design, Business Process Integration and Management, and Grid and Utility Computing.

September TaxoCoP call - Taxonomies for Customer Support
September 27 Seth Earley's Taxonomy Community of Practice Call Series [monthly]
Building applications and systems to support customer processes - either self service or call center support - requires an understanding of your customer's 'intent' as well as their mental model. Terminology has to be intuitive and self evident in the case of self service, or needs to lead the service rep down the correct path in the case of call center support.

In this session, you'll hear about a large health insurance company who will discuss how they approached developing a taxonomy and metadata standard to support a 17,000 person call center. You'll also hear a case study about a large UK based telecom service company and how they structured content and tagging to support web self service and an interactive voice response (IVR) deployment.

How to Fix a Broken Intranet
October 11 CM Pros Optaros Events
Organizations build an intranet to facilitate communication, encourage collaboration, and streamline processes. Unfortunately, too many of these internal sites have failed to achieve their business objectives and now require fixing.

Social software - notably blogs, wikis and social bookmarking - offer powerful solutions for fixing a broken intranet. And open source content management solutions provide an ideal platform for supporting these applications, because they enable organizations to afford experimentation and reduce the innovation cycle.

A 90 minute information packed session is offered free at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. in Toronto, Julian Mills, of Prescient Digital Media, and Seth Gottlieb, of Optaros

Information Realities: Shaping the Digital Future for All"
    November 3-8, 2006
    Hilton Austin, Austin, Texas

Information technology has enabled an expanding digital world, inextricably linked to our physical existence but revolutionary in terms of human creativity and thought. New technologies for mobile communication, massively distributed collaboration, and real-time information sharing are radically impacting human expressions, interactions and records. There is likely to be a continuing demand for powerful information organization, aggregation, and dissemination tools to harness these new information realities.

However, the key to understanding these trends must be found at human and social levels. To reflect on and address the challenges ahead, some of the critical questions we are interested in are:

    • What are the implications of these digital trends?
    • What opportunities are arising?
    • Are there dangers that we need to prepare for?
    • How will the future information world be shaped and who will shape it?

Practical Uses for DITA - Part 2: Product Documentation and Training
March 26 Events submitted via web form.
A long-standing problem at PTC, as with other companies, has been our limited ability to reuse common content among different document deliverables. To reduce cost and improve the re-usability of our documents, we needed a single-source XML authoring environment to create modular content to be used by multiple authors across multiple courses and published in multiple formats.

Attend this webinar to learn how:

    * Single-sourcing using the capabilities of Arbortext allowed for 9+ deliverables from one source
    * Using a DITA based solution helped to modularize course design and facilitate reuse
    * Adopting a dynamic publishing solution benefited course consistency, standards and development

Content management is more important than ever. But even as organizations are working to get their hands around rapidly growing and increasingly diverse collections of content, new web technologies are providing opportunities to create, manage, share, and deliver richer content more easily, sometimes cheaper, and often quicker.

This does not (usually) mean you need to "rip and replace" your existing systems - "content management" is not simply an application, but a strategy that employs a wide range of tools and practices that complement each other. The challenge is to figure out what works and what doesn't, and what works together. What are the successful combinations of web content management, enterprise search, text analytics, social computing, infrastructure, etc.? This year we'll focus on helping you move beyond the mainstream content technologies you may be used to, to enhanced "2.0" versions.

Join the discussion with industry experts from leading technology, enterprise IT, analyst, and consulting firms who will keep you engaged and educated on the latest successful strategies, technologies and techniques so you can ensure your organization doesn't get left behind.

      July 13 - 15 Workshop

The JoAnn Hackos Workshop Series announces the Minimalism: Creating Manuals People Can Use workshop in Boulder, CO July 13-14, 2010 taught by JoAnn Hackos. We invite you to join JoAnn in understanding the key to getting the maximum return on your single-sourcing investment. Learn how to reduce the quantity of documentation you produce by focusing on the needs of the users, eliminating unnecessary verbiage, and aligning your documentation strategy with your company’s market position.

Minimalism continues to be one of our most popular workshops. As you know, information developers everywhere are being told to cut the volume, reduce costs for translation, make information more easily accessible, and provide only what audiences need to know. Best Practices Conference 2011
September 12 - 14 Join our CIDM members and colleagues for a deep dive into Measuring Anything. Based on input from all of the members who took part in our marathon conference calls in April, the Advisory Council and I selected the conference theme book:

How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of "Intangibles" in Business, by Douglas Hubbard

We've invited key members to present the measurements they've put into practice, and we're planning a fantastic interactive session where you get to plan the measurement that gets the attention of your management and answers your questions about what and how to measure.

But measuring isn't the only subject we highlight. Don't miss presentations on collaborating across the enterprise, developing a strategic plan, and delving into new media. If you've been to Best Practices before, you know that the presentations, showcase, and interactive sessions are only part of the experience. Join me for a one-of-a-kind community-building experience.

Minimalism: Creating Information People Really Need
December 5 - 6 Workshop The JoAnn Hackos Workshop Series announces the Minimalism: Creating Information People Really Need workshop in Lanham, MD December 5–6, 2012 taught by Bill Gearhart. We invite you to join Bill in understanding the key to getting the maximum return on your single-sourcing investment.

The Minimalism workshop gives you specific guidelines for evaluating your information and making the right decisions to reduce the volume. But the Minimalism workshop is not about cutting the verbiage alone. We focus on what readers really need to know.

Bring your own materials to the workshop and participate in a series of hands-on sessions to examine your documents and plan for major changes. Many attendees report on decreasing documentation volume by 50% and translation costs by more.
